With the first pick in the 2009 MBA Draft, the Naughty Koalas selected forward Blake Griffin and followed up with the addition of guard James Harden, chosen second overall with a draft pick acquired in trade from the Yavapai Swashbucklers.

Coach Mads also released forward Thaddeus Young, clearing roster space for a free agent signing of center JaVale McGee.
